Course Description

Geography is the study of places and the relationships between people and their environments. Geographers explore both the physical properties of Earth’s surface and the human societies spread across it. They also examine how human culture interacts with the natural environment and the way that locations and places can have an impact on people. Geography seeks to understand where things are found, why they are there, and how they develop and change over time.
Topics include:
- Power of the Earth: an exploration of earth processes, extreme earth events and how this interacts with societies.
- Atmospheric Processes: an introduction to weather, climates and climate change.
- Population Dynamics: how populations are changing around the world, global and national migration trends, how humans are responding to population issues.
- Applying geographic skills such as mapping and statistical skills
- Analysing a contemporary geographic issues.
- Conducting geographic research.
Prerequisites
Achieved or higher in most of the 10SS1 course assessments including an achieved or higher grade in the 10SS1 end of year exam AND at least one of the writing or reading NCEA co requisites.
