09 Visual Arts 1

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ayisha Mulgrew.

This is a compulsory course which all year 9 students do twice a week for half a year. Students complete 3 units using a range of media including drawing with pencil and pens, design work with Ipads and painting. Students will learn the process of gathering resources in a variety of ways, developing ideas for an artwork before completing the work using practical skills and techniques. They will look to the work of New Zealand and International artists for inspiration. All work is organised by the individual student in their own personal folder.

The Year 9 course is designed to teach students the core artistic skills required at a Level 5 on the Arts National Curriculum. This includes the following:

Developing Practical Knowledge in the Visual Arts

  • Students will apply knowledge of elements and principles for a range of art-making purposes, using convent.

Developing Ideas in the Visual Arts 

  • Students will generate, develop, and refine visual ideas in response to a variety of motivations and a study of selected artists’ works. 

Communicating and Interpreting in the Visual Arts

  • Students will describe and evaluate how ideas and art-making processes are used to communi- cate meaning in selected objects and images. 

 Understanding the Visual Arts in Context 

  • Students will investigate the relationship between the production of art works and their social context.
