13 MAGnet Digital Toi

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Natalie Absolum.

The 13MAGnet Digital Toi course is run in partnership with Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, and offers students the opportunity to take their first step on a vocational pathway while still at school. Students spend one day a week at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa, studying industry-relevant standards that offer credits toward NCEA Level 3. This course is designed for students who are passionate about Te Ao Māori and Design.

Students will unpack the practices of whakairo and whakairo production and how these are changing with technology and the introduction of new materials. Digital technology will be introduced and utilised as a means of drawing and designing, leading to the student developing and delivering a Toi Māori project of their own design, incorporting digital technology and new materials to create a physical piece of Toi and digital portfolio. Students will develop project plans, work with a range of materials including acrylic, paints, ply and vinyl to create their final piece, develop a portfolio of their creative process and work and exhibit their final piece of Toi. Students will learn alongside experienced artists and kaiako, experienced in running their own businesses and recognised for their work.

Attendance is taken twice a day and sent back to MAGS. Students will need to be willing to catch up on work from other lessons that they miss while they are on the course. They will be provided with tutorials during the school week to help with this. Students and whānau will need to show a commitment to attendance in this course.
