Course Description

Prerequisites

It is a prerequisite that students accepted into this course have been receiving instrumental lessons for approximately one year and are at a practical level equivalent to Grade 1 or 2.  

Pupils taking this course must have lessons on their major instrument for the whole school year either privately, or as part of the school instrumental programme. It is essential that students are part of a school music ensemble, either instrumental or vocal. Where possible, the group will be any of our Orchestras, Jazz Bands, Chamber Groups, Choirs or part of the Contemporary Music Programme.

This course develops students musical skills through playing instruments, composing original music and analysing different musical styles.

Course content and assessment includes solo and group performance, composition, music technology, musical knowledge through a variety of contexts, aural skills and  applied music theory.

Assessment

Assessment will take the forms of performances, aural tests, written assignments and a composition portfolio.
