13 Agriculture and Horticultural Science 1

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Raechel Milich

The course includes the study of profitability of farming and how a farmer works out how to produce steak that consumers want and will pay a premium for. The environmental impact of production systems are studied. The specific production practices that are used to meet market requirements are studied. Production systems analysed include fine wool, dairy and kiwifruit.

The subject builds on Level 2 Agriculture, which emphasises the central role primary industries play in the New Zealand economy.

There are four assessments in total. Two are external (exam) and two are internally assessed.

Prerequisites

At least 10 credits in Level 2 Agriculture & Horticulture (12AG1)

OR at least 10 credits in Level 2 Chemistry or Biology 

OR HoD approval

Pathway

This subject leads on to tertiary qualifications which can be undertaken at farm cadet school, training college or (for more academic students) university. N.B. to study agricultural or horticultural science at university it is recommended that a student studies chemistry to level 3. There is a vast range and number of employment opportunities in the primary industries.
